I alter existing jewelry & use charms & chains from stores..jewelry maker? Designer?

So I don’t actually know how to make chains or my own pendants or anything aside from making them out of clay, or out of existing beads. So this means I can’t really call myself a jewelry maker, right? Can I still say I like to design jewelry when people ask? I just feel like I don’t have any real talent, and won’t until I make my own everything.

I call myself a jewelry maker–I use beads, chains, cord, pendants, etc, that I bought at the store; I’ve never made a bead or pendant on my own. And it’s not just buying stuff at craft stores and bead stores, either–I do buy finished pieces from other stores or second-hand sometimes and take them apart to use for my own designs.
I don’t know anyone who makes chains and all on their own, though there are bead makers (clay, glass/lampwork, for example). But certainly not everyone, and some of the bead makers don’t make things with their own beads–they just sell them.

But designer might not be a bad term if you feel that way about “jewelry maker.”
