How to Do your Own Home Windows Installation
A home windows installation can be a daunting project and saving up the money to pay a professional to come in and do it for you is something that many people just can’t do. While in some cases it is a very good idea to have someone come in and do the home windows installation for you, you don’t have to hire anyone. It is possible to install your windows yourself, and if you are careful, you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself.
It’s a common thing to do a home windows installation and replace your old windows with new ones that are more energy efficient. You might also want to replace windows to Repair a window that is leaking, letting in drafts, or just to increase the value of your home and make it look much better. Keep in mind that replacing windows will take some time, but it will be worth it.
The first thing you should do is measure the existing window. You could measure from the inside, but it is better to take the measurement from the outside because it will be a lot more accurate.
Once you have the accurate measurement, head to the hardware store. Yes, you can order a window online but there is no guarantee that you will get the best price, best materials, or even that your window will arrive with the right hardware or in one piece. At the hardware store, you can easily get advice and help if you need it. Order the exact same size window as the one that you measured. You may want to subtract a quarter to a half inch on either side when you measure, depending on your home. Old windows were normally put in before siding and brickwork, so a smaller window could be a better fit.
The window opening should be level and square. You can use shims to help level it out if need be. When you take the old window out, make a note of the way it was attached to your home. The new window should be attached the same way. A wooden frame can easily be screwed in. A brick home might need wood blocks around the window for you to be able to screw it in. Simply get some shims and you will be able to keep the window where it is supposed to be. Vernier and vinyl siding usually has wood underneath, so it’s easy to install the window.
Screw the window in and then caulk around the window. This will give you a weatherproof seal and will keep water, drafts, and insects from getting into your home. The hardware store should be able to help you with any questions. Set aside about four hours to put in your new window from start to finish.
