Sprinkler system help?
I recently started helping a friend Repair his sprinkler system. His old lawn mowing serviceman cut all of the electric wires running from the control box to the individual valves, and I need to connect them back together.
Here is what I know so far: The system has 28 zones, and zones 9-15 still work fine. All of the other zones do not come on, however. From the mess of cut wires, I have isolated the ground wires, all I need to to is reconnect the proper wire for each zone. There are three colors remaining: blue, red, and green.
Any ideas on how to do this? For right now, I am just going to set one zone at a time to run for an hour and then try all the same colored wires to see if I can get the zone to come on.

Zones 9,10,11,12,13,14,15 together are 7 zones. 28 / 7 = 4
You have three wires remaining. Each wire supplies current to open 7 zones each, although in your case apparently not all at the same time.
So you would pick any colored wire remaining and then use that to drive 1 zone at a time (one ground wire) until you have a map of where each ground wire is zoned. Then you should group 2 through 8 on one wire [say Blue], then 16-22 on Red and 23-1 on Green. That way each supply wire will do 7 zones in sequence.
The “ground wires” aren’t ground, they are the return half of the loop from each of the four colored wires and the solenoid that opens a valve to feed a sprinkler. The timer/controller just connects and disconnects the power wires [the four colored ones] to each one of those “ground” wires to open and close a zone.
